Unconstitutional debtor prisons triggered by draconian child support guidelines are why father, actor, and entertainer Darius McCrary is behind bars again over an alleged tens of thousands in child support arrears. Interestingly, McCrary, 47, a beloved figure in Hollywood, remembered on the show Family Matters, has been vocal about how the child support system treats fathers.
McCrary, the father of three, was arrested for his eldest and only son in a child support case established over a decade ago. In an interview earlier this year, Darius shared his feelings about the ongoing case in Oakland County, Michigan, where he is set to be extradited from California on October 26, 2023. Sadly, for the past nearly thirty years, children have been turned into a financial plan courtesy of Uncle Sam. The passing of a legacy from father to son, once an essential staple in families, communities, and the United States, was traded for the almighty dollar. According to the Office of Child Support Services, child Support is a welfare recovery program that criminalizes fathers. Darius founded Fathers Care, an organization fighting for reform to the child support system for several reasons including, but not limited to, more equality in custody agreements, 2. abolishment of debtor prisons, which were outlawed in 1833, and 3. identifying that withholding children from loving fathers is harmful to the child and should be a crime.
While we fight for Darius’s freedom from bondage, we will also fight for his freedom in this frivolous child support case and for a path back to his son to mend their shattered relationship.
